High Fashion Crime Scenes

Photographer Melanie Pullen brings together couture and death. her photos are meticulously crafted to look like the sort of crime scene you'd see in police photos. there's something very disturbing of course in how macabre they are, but equally disturbing is how drawn you are to them. how beautiful she makes them.

i saw these a few years ago when someone directed me to her site (highfashioncrimescenes.com). odd that it's opening again, this time during milan fashion week.

you can find a full interview with her here: http://www.nylonmag.com/?section=article&parid=64

hong kong id - take 3

the past few years of too much celebrity watching and looking at my sis's party photos has led me to develop my own, initially deliberate, but now mostly unconscious way of posing for pics. this became quite apparent yesterday as i was getting my picture taken for my hk id. because my face is round and wide (according to mags, the least adaptable face shape of all) i've learned to angle it just so to get the most slimming effect while still displaying a clear view of all facial features. so as i sat there on the rounded swivel seat, under the harsh and not very forgiving flourescent lights i went unknowingly into a toned-down version of this pose - obviously, to eek out as much attractiveness as you can possibly get from a govt. id photo. in my mind's eye i was sitting perfectly straight up, looking perfectly straight at the camera. but apparently that is not what the lady saw on the computer screen. she kept trying to nudge me this way and that, telling me to look here, move my head there. she resorted to using hand gestures, much like the way you direct a baby or an animal during a photo shoot. i was surprised. when she told me to move my head 2 degrees to the left, i actually said, "really?" because when i did, i felt slightly unbalanced, 2 degrees off. i quickly stole a glance on the screen, and she was right. only then was i straight. huh. after three clicks of the camera, she finally got a usable picture. though, knowing i was being shot so straight on made me feel vulnerable and flat. and round. and the fact that she made me part my bangs to the side so that they wouldn't obsctruct my eyes just made it worse. i look like a mother of 3 who's just moved to hk from china. or maybe the phillipines. but when she showed me the final take, and asked me if i was happy with it. i very nonchalantly said, oh, yeah, sure. i didn't want her to think i cared too much.

perhaps i will post that photo later today depending on my mood...

holy cow

it was crazy today in causeway bay - popular shopping district in hk. i've been there on a sunday before but today was nuts. i was looking for kitchen stuff and discovered that on the 7th floor of sogo there are numerous sampling stations about. here are some blurry photos. i'd been "apprehended" before for snapping pics inside stores in hk so i kinda took them in a hurry. don't think i'd make a very good criminal.

i had some vietnamese for lunch today. nice effort - summer rolls were actually really good. coffee was ok. and pho was eh. too greasy.

here are some pics from the wknd...friday at alex and jonathan's farewell thing...

guy with his eyes closed is my boss...hahah...he looks drunker than he is....

i just found out that my friends dustin and jon won an emmy for their american express/ellen degeneres spot. i'm so proud of them. they're so cute and funny. i knew they were nominated but had forgotten all about it. we worked at and were miserable at lowe together. and we're all at ogilvy now, except they're in NY.

adidas partay = lame

met up with jamie tonight for an adidas party. it was pretty lame. but there were free drinks. that's geo...he's very sweet. brought us some wine. he's also lived in ny. music was eh. though they did play some mashup between the cure and a hip hop song. don't know the song but love the cure.

not much happened. we just sat around. there was a fashion show which i didn't see. hsu chi was there with a wig on. then we went to eat. that's jamie and her friend kevin. nice guy. and that's me and fed. they call him the mayor. only jamie and i ate. we cleaned up. it's late. so my sentences. are short. and there's the guy. at the resto. i like. his ensemble. :)

lame

i forgot my camera at home today. again. it has been charging for at least 48 hours now. probably more. so, to make up for the last few days, here's one pic...

this is my tribute to Az. Azriel. Beloved and much-hated, and most-feared kitty cat of ours. He is in another home somewhere on the upper east side, terrorizing some other folks. i've never painted ever before and this is my first attempt. so no, it doesn't completely resemble az, nor does it look much like a cat, but more like a human-like, werewolf of some sort, although i guess werewolves are supposed to be somewhat human to begin with.

i've been listening to This American Life (yes, i'm waaaay behind) on my bus rides, old shows that eug had loaded onto his ipod last summer. i love it so. i have a crush on ira glass, even though he may be gay. but then again i also had a crush on david sedaris knowing he was gay with very gay stories, that is until i heard his voice. which is great for story-telling but can put a girl off a crush almost immediately. but, still, i love him. just not in that way.

(Ira's bio: http://www.pri.org/glass.html)

there was one show where they crammed as many 2-3 min stories into 60 mins as possible. i was laughing out loud one day - ppl prob thought i was crazy. and then the next day, i almost started crying. yes folks, it is a rollercoaster of emotions. one i loved in particular was a fictional meeting of the penguin and mary poppins. anyone who's truly interested can get it from me. worth asking for. only a few mins long...

dehydrated

i can't decide yet whether i drink more often here in hk or back in ny. both places are way too conducive to this past time. eug and i met up with jamie and agnes for dinner at this place called Sup 1 in central. it's a wine and oyster bar that does a kinda asian/french fusion thing. but whatever it was it was yummy. then eug and i met up with our friend sarah who's here from australia for three months...we didn't stay out too late but i'm tired. i guess i did wake up at 7:30 am. to see eug off. he's on his way to ny for more training. i wish i could go to ny...

eugene has gotten me into watching videos on myspace. here's a really funny one.

Ah L'Amour

discovered this french label today on fashionologie, which i just discovered as well. it's an all-dress collection with some empire waist, baby doll looks which is a little last season, but still cute. and then there are the belted numbers which are nice too. you can find the collection here - www.heimstone.com, but i like how they put it in a video. good song.
