hello, it’s me.

i'm back after a two week hiatus. I got lazy. there's another post below detailing the previous wknd. i'm all caught up!

So, this weekend. Friday we hung out with some of my work friends. That was pretty fun. Some dancing again. Yippee!

Yesterday we met up with a childhood friend of eugene’s from libya, Tom who’s now 33. They hadn’t seen each other in many, many years. Tom was there from age 4-15. Eug was there from I think 8-12. It was so nice hearing stories about libya and how crazy it was to live there during that time. Tom’s dad was the official bootlegger. He built whole distillers to make spirits, wine and beer in their bathroom. 4 times distilled! The process sounds pretty complicated. They had rows of beers in glasses, separated by magazines and when they got too careless years later there were several minor explosions. His dad also built a lawnmower out of a washing machine motor, some wheels from a trolley or something, and home-made blades. Tom’s compound had about 20 families and had no phone line until someone took a wire from another location and built poles across what he called the desert to their area. They built wells for water. The Germans there built a swimming pool. They have stories of jumping on Kadafi’s bed and pissing on his wall when he invited expat families over for dinner after the US bombed Libya. Another time, they chased down a duck since there was an embargo and they had no meat. Eugene’s dad slashed its neck in their bathtub and everyone had hand plucking it. The Taiwanese families also got together, gathered the neighborhood dogs and feasted. Tom’s dog was one of them. Despite that and all the hardship, he had nothing but really fond memories. What an awesome childhood. Today, he’s making millions from selling cameras on ebay. Living in Australia, he hadn’t even heard of it three years ago. he moved here to get away from paying taxes in Australia. And since he is on an on-going tourist visa, he doesn’t pay taxes here either. Obviously, he’s doing amazingly well, and says he doubles his revenue every month. He’s a one-man operation and is fairly secretive about his business and won’t tell us the name of his ebay store, which is understandable.

Today eug and I met up with a few guys from my office to watch the undefeated mayweather take on the undefeated brit, hatton. The fight was playing at a bar called amici on two screens, using Slingbox. I’m not usually into boxing but I was this time since my friend jonathan and I have this ongoing biritish vs American feud. There were two big screens and it was packed with brits. So, my cheering for mayweather quieted down a bit as soon as I realized I was one of few ppl to do so. It was fun just standing around drinking beer, acting all guyish. It was a great match and it was pretty sweet to see mayweather win. I’m not very good at rubbing things in ppl’s faces but I tried. Afterwards, we went to a diner called the Flying Pan and waited forever. But, the breakfast burrito I ordered was definitely worth it. That’s the closest thing I’ve had to a real American breakfast since I’ve been here. All the eggs benedict eug and I’ve tried at other brunch places just never measured up to the ones in the states.

shenzhen

LAST SATURDAY eug and I went to Shenzhen, China. It’s about an hours train-ride away from HK. And the visa cost me over a hundred US. They charge Americans more. So, Shenzhen is famous for it’s knock-offs. And it’s spas. Eug and I went mainly to buy DVDs. With the recommendation from a friend we went to an openly fake DVD shop. Everywhere else we went in the main mall – people were just walking by whispering “DVD” to us, offering to show us their stash, as though they were selling drugs outside a club. We were a little nervous about bringing them across the border, but the store conveniently offers delivery service for $20 US, guaranteed or your money back. I got them that Monday - from a guy who i met across the street from my office in a sketchy looking van. when he opened the back there were tons of brown packages. We’ve started watching Weeds. So far, I don’t really see what the hype is about.

Shenzhen is much more developed than I imagined. It’s very metropolitan, more so than the Beijing I visited more than 4 yrs ago. And people are definitely new money. The manners are still pretty rough though. They had no qualms about stealing cabs, not NY-style, where it’s sneaky. It was more outright, def. every man for himself. It took us about an hour to catch a cab. we were approached several times by normal cars. one was a van with supertinted windows. not sure how he expects to get customers that way. i've no idea what the name of the restaurant we went to, but it was soooo good. And cheap! Their specialty is a variety of soups, which they keep inside giant pots outside the restaurant.

Afterwards we went to Queen Spa, also on recommendation. It’s a pretty popular destination for HK peeps. My friend didn’t warn me at all about what we to expect. Eug and I both agreed that it was a pretty surreal surreal experience. the place was massive. Probably about 4 stories. We felt like we were on a spaceship heading out to another planet, perhaps 50 years into the future. (when I tell my friend this, she’s totally surprised. Apparently it’s quite common in china.) As you can see from the photo below, all the hostesses are dressed in these white, floor-length coats. not so odd on its own, but def. spacecraft-y. Eug and I headed to separate men’s and women’s dressing rooms. Huge. Super nice. About 4 separate areas. Lotsa unnecessary nakedness. ppl sitting around in front of vanity stations, blow drying their hair. Or watching tv on the sofas. We changed into pajamas. I then made my way up to the third floor to meet Eugene. i don't think I’ve never been so wide-eyed before. There were several open areas with rows and rows of recliners, right next to each other, each with its own small tv. it was pretty bright. All the patrons were in pajamas. No one in their own clothes. (thus I couldn’t sneak my camera up) All the masseuses were girls. some with costumey, sexyish clothes on. There was a wall with a huge photo of the top masseuses of the month, lined up next to each other like rockettes, or bacon. they all had quite strained smiles on. the customers were all in their own world. Just watching tv while they were getting massages, manis, pedis. Some were sleeping. There was a young couple snuggling together on one recliner. It seemed like something that should be done in private, yet everything was in the open. There were about 150 ppl, prob. I think full capacity could hold about 600 ppl? Families were just hanging out. There was a buffet with free fruit, coffee, tea and desserts. Eug and I had a good laugh as we saw one middle-aged guy leaving the dessert station with a wide, child-like grin, licking his ice cream. There was a restaurant with dining tables in nooks, separated by glass walls, with hanging ceiling lamps, set up like you were eating in your own little dining room, everyone in pajamas. but even that wasn't private. you could see everyone. it felt bit voyeuristic. like i had superman's xray vision. I think what weirded me out most was the pajamas, eating hotpot or whatever. a bit mental institution. oh, the similes could go on and on... I had no idea where to look for Eugene. and I kinda freaked out a bit. It felt like a dream. No one understood what I was saying. And they looked at me kinda curiously as if I was speaking an alien language.

Eug and I found each other soon enough and went for our massages. In our own room. The massage was ok. the girls looked a bit trashy. and weren't too pleasant. Afterwards, we hung out, ate our vanilla ice cream in our wafer cones (so good!) and just observed. we got used to it pretty quickly. we even considered staying overnight! thought maybe they had rooms, but they only had separate men's and women's sleeping areas. so we decided next time we'd just spend the entire day there and get the works. I wish I had more pics, but I was told no photos were allowed when I tried to sneak in a few pics as we were leaving.

THE NEXT DAY we went to see our friend Louise’s husband Vance, conduct three pieces for the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra. He normally plays the bassoon for the HK Philharmonic and it was his first time conducting. He did a great job as far as I could tell. I really enjoyed it. The music was beautiful. Though, I did get sleepy towards the end.

on the wall as we officially entered china - suspected pickpockets.
most of them look the same, to me.

caught!

ddddddddddamn

Gamblers Crew of Korea The Official 2007 Documentary/Trailer Directed by Darkness "The One" Featuring Darkness, Bruce Lee, Soul Soy, Still, So, The End, Sick, Ssun, Noodle, Pop, Rush, Blast, Zesty, Furious and more

a few things

I’m into porcelain and ceramic figurines at the moment (hence, the two bunnies we found recently). Here are some by artist Barnaby Barford I saw in the nov. issue of wallpaper. They commissioned him to create these dolls to feature the latest looks by big brands like LV and Gucci. The pics are crap so best to just find the issue and take a look for yourself.

Lladro
does more traditional pieces. A lot of them are kinda cheese, but there are some pretty, more contemporary ones in there as well.

We walked into a new furniture store at Pacific Place today. Found a super cool rug, but unfortunately the price was way uncool - $42,000 HK. It’s from The Rug Company, designed by Committee. They also have some designed by Marni, Vivienne Westwood and others.

And lastly, Eug and I have been playing designer ourselves! We’ve been experimenting with dyes lately. We started off with tie-dye. Using my jr. high experience and a youtube tutorial we did some on headbands, socks and tees. It was fun, but a bit too hippyish. So then we just dyed t-shirts without all the swirls and stuff. Got some kinda cool results. Next, I want to try some on a light-colored pair of jeans. We’re hoping to host a night of Drinking and Dying (clothes, not like death-dying, of course) with a few friends soon. Hopefully the dyes we bought will survive washings.

jon in HK

Jon was in town this weekend. (missed you joan!) But I kept forgetting my camera so unfortunately there are no pics. We went out on Friday to a few bars and clubs. Had a pretty fun night. I took a jello shot for the first time in ages. And I got lots of dancing in, which is always a big plus. Even if it was mostly by myself. Sad…

Saturday a small group of us were invited of to jon’s parents’ place for thanksgiving dinner. It was yummy. Felt good to sit down and have a proper turkey day. Loved their house. Makes me want one. A real place. And then, of course, as always happens when an event is catered around jon, we went to karaoke. It was pretty fun. Though, current English songs were a bit lacking.

Eug and I saw the heartbreak kid today. It was not nearly as funny as something about mary, but it did it’s job. we laughed a lot and there were some good gross moments.

new to me

this site's probably been around, but i just found it through refinery29

http://streetpeeper.com/

i like it cause it tells you what they're wearing...it kinda answers that nagging feeling you get sometimes when walking down the street and you fall in love with something someone is wearing and you're dying to ask her where she got it...but you don't

the truth

so, not only am i out of the loop in terms of tv, i'm also out of the loop in terms of tv and entertainment news. my friend jen explains the real 30 rock situation below.

"Okay the reason why 30 Rock is stopping is because there is a writer’s strike in the industry. No writers are writing anything right now and they are striking at all the big networks and film lots in Hollywood and NYC. Tina Fey is a writer first, actor second so she’s been on the picket line since day one. It started last Monday so we’ll see how long it goes for. It might go on for a long time which means that the business is in serious trouble. We’re all really worried/stressed about it."

she's stressed because she works in the biz as an agent. not cause she's weird.

i miss you, American television

i took this clip from ken's blog...because it's awesome, and is definitely worth messing up the right side of the page for a few posts.

alex baldwin, you are as they say, fine wine. who would've thought he had this in him? even after these past few years of some excellent performances. sad that they're going the way of arrested development. i thought surely the show had more mainstream appeal...

eug turns 29

We went to macau this weekend for eug’s bday. It was so much fun. It was hodgepodge of our friends here but we all bonded over beyonce’s concert at the Venetian. Not that we’re huge fans, but it was a great show. I gotta give it to her, she’s a great performer. The production was amazing. There were side acts with different female musicians and dancers. The male dancers were especially badass. She sampled a lot and sang covers as well, which was a bit of a cheat to me, but kept it entertaining. And she saved irreplaceable for last. It was a great way to end the show. Her voice, while not as amazing as Christina Aguilera’s could really hold it’s own in that giant stadium.

We decided not to buy our return tix til that night which was initially considered a bad idea since the only ones left were 12:30 am and 7 am. We didn’t gamble much – eug lost $1500HK – oh well. After the concert we headed over to a club called sky 21. I woulda lasted longer if it were hip-hop, but dancing is dancing!

Around 3 am, eug, sarah and I headed to the pier to go on standby. We ended up sharing a cab with an older white australian guy who is a big-time slots machine guy. forget what he did exactly, but turned out he and sarah, who's from australia, knew someone in common. what a small world fer reals. anyways, we got to the pier only to find out that the return tix the venetian sold us were non-exchangeable! Luckily there was a scalper nearby and we were able to work out a deal with him. with 40 mins til the 4 am ferry, we headed over the .5 mile-long bridge in search of some food. We chowed down on our MSG-laden noodle soup with 15 mins to scurry back across the bridge in anticipation of whether or not we were sold scam tix. I guess we weren't because within minutes we were knocked out on the way back to HK. We finally made it to our beds around 6:30 am.

It was a great night. Lotsa just roaming around and going with the flow. It was a good thing that we got stuck with 7 am tix. Oh, to feel young and carefree.

i didn’t take too many pics and the ones from the concert were just not working out - but here they are…

yes we do

halloween here is pretty popular...i celebrated with peeps at work. it was pretty fun. i went as goth girl. sure, it's a bit of a cop-out costume, but i spent only 8 bucks on the silver devil skull necklace that topped off my outfit. black and skulls = insta-goth.
